There are precisely two problems with the setup: ~/.bash_profile & wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe

Since reading this post, I have had nothing but tremendous success using the standard Windows EVE client under wine-devel 1.7.9 for several weeks.
